Surrounded by a historic brick 19th century building in Toronto’s St. Lawrence neighbourhood, the Canadian Opera Company courtyard was designed to be a “hidden gem” in the city. Defined on three sides by existing brick building walls, a fourth garden wall fully encloses the space, with large arched windows allowing picturesque views into the courtyard. The garden is accessed through an ornate iron gate, opening into a formal lawn circumscribed by a flagstone walkway. A 19th century French gazebo is the garden’s focal point, corresponding to freestanding pilasters which echo the forms of adjoining buildings.
