Edgemere is a new community of heritage-inspired, luxury homes on the shore of Lake Ontario in Oakville. Situated on the former Ryrie estate, the site includes restored heritage features such as a Japanese teahouse, groundskeeper’s lodge, carriage house and extensive Edwardian English gardens designed by early Canadian landscape architect Charles Ernest Woolverton. NAK Design Strategies worked with architectsAlliance to create a contemporary design vision for Edgemere inspired by the site’s English garden heritage. Emphasis was placed on crafting direct and framed views to the lake, with vistas articulated by a series of stone and glass terraces and tiers of mass planting providing movement and interest in all seasons. The existing estate’s famous English gardens border the west side of the site, offering a private parkland defined by the original stone walls of Wedgewood Creek. At the water’s edge a new public boardwalk is bordered by carefully selected planting to maintain privacy and views from the homes.
