Design Intent

NAK Design Strategies completed the landscape design for a new, 4-storey building housing the Elementary Teachers’ Federation of Ontario’s (ETFO) Provincial Office in Toronto. NAK worked with KPMB Architects to design a site which responds to the residential context of the historic Upper Jarvis neighbourhood; articulated forms interact with the street and complement existing architecture. A multi-seasonal landscape of rich textures and native species ties the architecture to the public realm, featuring an intensive green roof and significant streetscape enhancements. Extensive effort was made to preserve and enhance existing trees, while new, large specimen trees were added to integrate the new landscape with its community context. Sustainable features of the project including geothermal heating, rainwater harvesting and green roof integrating a storm water management system earned the project a LEED Platinum certification.
