NAK Design Strategies worked with architectsAlliance on the Ice Condominiums at York Centre, a three-tower mixed-use development near Toronto’s downtown waterfront. Two residential towers are tied at their base by a green roof canopy shading a large courtyard and podium housing shops, cafes and restaurants. Framed from above by organically shaped skylights in the canopy, NAK’s design for the courtyard features café terrace seating, canopy trees, and a stream-like water feature. The ground plane is punctuated by a series of paved and planted circles mirroring the skylights above. Significant measures were taken to ensure the mature growth of canopy trees, including dropping the garage slab to provide a nearly 10 foot depth of planting soil.
