NAK Design Strategies was commissioned by the former City of North York to redesign Mel Lastman Square. A major consideration in the design was the sun-shade factor during different times of the day and seasonally. This factor was critical in determining the location and layout of structures, gathering areas and planting design. A high degree of attention was paid to the detail design of paving and landscape features to establish a sense of continuity in this large-scale space. Since its renovation, Mel Lastman Square has been optimally used year round.
