Public Art Program-Lakeview Village, Mississauga, Ontario

Lakeview Village located in Mississauga, is anticipated to be one of the most transformative mixed-use waterfront communities, spanning 177-acres that will feature diverse mixed-used spaces as well as trails, parks, green spaces, along with cultural and recreational amenities.  All these attractions will be connected to transit and the nearby 64-acre Jim Tovey Lakeview Conservation Area, creating a unique experience for community members and visitors alike.

As part of the lead consultant team working with Lakeview Community Partners Limited from initial bid to the present, NAK continues to lead the Urban Design and Landscape Architecture component of the project to formulate and deliver the Lakeview Village vision, including the management, production and implementation of the Development Master Plan document, submitted to the City of Mississauga in October 2018, which sets a framework and identifies core values for the development.

In the lead up to the development of Lakeview Village, a public art program was established this summer to create a series of outdoor art pieces to animate the project site during the construction process. The completed pieces include over 1,600 linear feet of artistic works and feature artists including sculptor, Ryan Longo; visual artist, Raquel Da Silva; painter, Lynn Taylor; poet, Duke Redbird; visual artist, Daniela Rocha (artist alias Planta Muisca); and 14 muralists, including several artists from Mississauga.  The art installations were funded through a unique artist-developer collaboration and are now on display for the public to enjoy along Mississauga’s waterfront located at 800 Hydro Road.   For this hoarding project, NAK’s Project Manager Yun Liu oversaw the construction of the art panels and worked with the supplier of the hoarding to come up with the overall design, including the hoarding steps at multiple locations, material selection and grading, and implementation.   If you don’t get a chance to see the artworks in person, you will have another opportunity! The hoarding will be re-used  and dispersed within Lakeview Community after construction is completed.

Chartwell Retirement Residences, Mississauga, Ontario

The new Head Office for Chartwell Retirement Residences is a four-storey building with extensive landscaping adjacent to Fletcher’s Creek and the DerryDale Golf Course. NAK implemented sustainable design ideas including an amenity green roof terrace to reduce heat island and permeable pavers at the entry court to capture surface water run off.  Moreover, a gabion basket retaining wall and bioswale with native grass vegetation was integrated to control overland surface runoff. NAK also designed a naturalized gathering spot with a permeable circulation path and landscaped garden for employees to enjoy.
